Often I am asked ‘Do you still shoot with film?’ ‘Yes’ I reply. And in the past year or so, I’ve concentrated my ‘film’ work in a series of 4X5 black and white portraits of interns and assistants here at Taxel Image Group. These dedicated students and professionals from colleges and institutes in this region have spent months assisting us to produce photographs for advertising and promotions. Towards the end of their tenure, we spend a few moments together with the Deardorff 4X5 Special between us, to create some ‘permanent’ impressions on film. (technical note: the 4X5 negatives are processed in house, scanned, and outputted as archival pigment prints.)

One enters these images as if they were ageless landscapes, putting in suspension all thought as to the origin of the reflective surfaces.

There is a tradition in photography to take note of what is right in front of one’s eyes. Alfred Stieglitz’s photograph ‘From the Back Window, 291′ comes to mind. These impressions sustain the photographer while fulfilling the duties and routines demanded of a business proprietor! BT

This is a series that creates itself, that is, they fall together as a group of related photographs. The fact that they are all made the same android camera is more relevant, than if, for instance, they were all made with a Hasselblad, Canon, Nikon, Sinar, or Deardorff camera. The nature of the optics and the rendering of tones, plus the way that the device handles (the way it literally is held) yields, under certain circumstances, extraordinary images. BT

As use of social media has taken off, the relevance of of the ‘blog’ for one like myself, who does not necessarily have a lot to ‘say’, but does have a lot to share, comes into question. Several times each week examples of my creative/ personal photography are posted on my Facebook wall. Recently I have also begun to regularly post examples of the work being generated by Taxel Image Group, i.e., a portfolio of commercial photography on the TIG wall.
That being said, I have also recently gotten requests to display (and sell) my art on line, so I will begin using this blog site to shamelessly promote that cause… experimentally, of course. Here is the first of what will become periodic displays of works that can be purchased as archival pigment prints in various sizes. Feel free to contact me directly for pricing and delivery details. Cheers, BT

Structure, Strength, and Order.

Structure Strength Harmony

Often one does not have to look far to find the reality of fundamental laws reflected in man’s creations. What allows a bridge to stand erect and sturdy for generations along with the elegance of it’s design? Further, light bending through the lens that then triggers electronic impulses to create a two dimensional representation challenges the viewer to feel one’s own presence while witnessing this wonder.
